The new BMW 3 Series range has received a fresh face along with a host of new technologies that extends to the new engine line-up, which now includes BMW EfficientDynamics measures. The new 3 Series is expected to arrive in South Africa sometime next yearThe exterior of the saloon and touring models has a new front end with double circular headlights that is underscored by means of chrome tubes. The corona rings can now also be used in the BMW 3 Series Saloon and the Touring model with optional bi-xenon headlamps as daytime running lights. New to this model are the two character lines on the exterior mirrors.
BMW claims that the rear bumpers, rear lights and luggage compartment handle of both the Saloon and the Touring have been completely redesigned. The dual section rear lights on both models are now structured in the BMW L-shape.
Depending on the model, the track of the rear axle has been widened by up to 24 millimeters by means of a new wheel carrier and other modified details.
The interior of these new models feature new materials and technologies for added comfort and convenience. The new generation of BMW’s iDrive system is an optional extra in the new 3 Series. This system is for activation and control of entertainment, information, navigation and telecommunications functions. The new BMW ConnectDrive system is optional in the new 3 Series. This system allows for unlimited Internet access inside the vehicle.
The line-up for the new 3 Series features a variety of powertrains made up of five petrol and five diesel units. Outputs range form 105 kW in the BMW 318i and BMW 318d to 225 kW in the BMW 335i. Engine types with BMW EfficientDynamics measures make use of Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start/Stop Function, Shift Point Display, needs-related control of auxiliary units and active aerodynamics with Automatic Air Intake Flaps. Engines are mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the seven-speed automatic transmission with double clutch transmission will be available in the 335i Coupe and Convertible.
BMW’s optional xDrive is added to enhance driving stability, driving dynamics and stability. The new additional DSC function with controlled brake intervention, including torque compensation, is aimed at increasing driving stability around corners. This xDrive system is available for five engine types of the BMW 3 Series Saloon and the BMW 3 Series Touring.
Standard safety features include the expected high performance braking system, with fade-free brakes, ABS, Dry Braking and Brake Standby functions, Dynamic Brake Control, Cornering Brake Control, and Dynamic Traction Control.
