Mercedes-Benz has already revealed its facelifted C-Class range (including coupé and cabriolet models), as well as its revised C43 variants. Now, the big daddy of the line-up has been unveiled ahead of its New York International Auto Show debut: the updated Mercedes-AMG C63 (for now, images of only the coupé have been released).

The Affalterbach-based performance arm of the German brand has applied a number of changes to the sedan, coupé and cabriolet versions of its thundering C63, giving each model a fresh look (note the new AMG-specific grille and the remodelled twin tailpipe elements) and an upgraded transmission with added ratios.

Yes, while the unchanged twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 engine is still offered in two states of tune – 350 kW/650 N.m in the standard C63 and 375 kW/700 N.m in the C63 S – the seven-speed gearbox of the pre-facelift model has been replaced with an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission with wet start-off clutch.

Mercedes-AMG says this 'box has been “tuned specifically for a dynamic driving experience”, with the wet start-off clutch saving weight and “optimising the response to the driver's accelerator pedal input”. A multiple downshift function allows more spontaneous bursts of speed, while the brand claims faster gear-shifts overall.

Interestingly, Mercedes-AMG has now made the electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential standard on all C63 variants. The 0-100 km/h sprint claims are unchanged, which means the C63 S still hits three figures in 3,9 seconds in coupé form (or 4,0 in sedan form), while the C63 takes 4,0 seconds (or 4,1 in sedan form).

Inside, you’ll find a new optional fully digital instrument cluster with a 12,3-inch screen diagonal, while a media display measuring 7 inches (with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels) comes standard. An alternative here is the 10,25-inch media display (with a resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels), which comes standard in conjunction with the Comand Online system.

There’s also a new steering wheel design that Mercedes-AMG describes as “extremely sporty”, with a heavily contoured rim. Trimmed in Nappa leather, the flat-bottomed tiller features “touch control” buttons and is complemented by galvanised steering paddles.
